A good handheld toy for my toddler for learning and french/english if possible.?
I am looking for a handheld toy for my son for Christmas, a bilingual one ideally that does french and english. He is only two and a half but is extremely bright and advanced for his age. He loves button/controls and I would love to find him a little handheld learning toy…any thoughts???
Nintendo DS is more for older children, but if supervised can be beneficial. There is a game where you can learn French, spanish, and japanese. It is quite good if you are an adult. Maybe get this for yourself so you can teach your little one what you have learned in a fun way. I love this for myself! It has games for you to play…but it would be too advanced for a two year old.
Are there grants or aid available to the parents of a blind/deaf child to purchase toys/learning equip.?
I think you can get toys either on loan or at a low fee at a regional center in your state. I am in PA and we have an eastern support center that supports school districts and preschool and early intervention programs and parents. they have assistive technology toys and products available in a loaner library of sorts.
There is another agency or group called lekotek—-I am just not sure I spelled that correctly. But I think it is people who adapt toys so that they can be used or more accessible for children with disabilities. I think their services are relatively affordable as well.
yes—try lekotek.org
Also in PA children with an IEP—Individualized Education Plan can be evaluated by an assistive technology team to see what their needs are for learning or play that is more technological—-this can be built into their educational program—–that is if traditional toys or learning approaches would not work and technology would better serve the needs of the child. This would be funded by your school district—-yet funding may vary a bit by state or school district within your state——-but nonetheless some system for managing this should be available—
You can also contact your local ARC —and see if an advocate might help you find the resources you are seeking—

what are the best toys for my 8 month old?
He has two leap frog learning toys for x-mas, what else is good….any suggestions please?
Get one of those nesting blocks sets (they make them in cardboard, thick, that go into one another and you can stack them on top of each other). Those are usually a hit. Try some ‘fake’ gadgets, like a false cell phone, remote, or other machinery-type gizmo. Kids seem to gravitate to those. And some books with the pop-up flaps, kids seem to like opening and closing the little windows. And if you can stand the noise, those popcorn-poppers seem to be loved by all. Good luck
